Here is a summary of the census information on the Scruton family of Watton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Our family interest is in Mary SCRUTON, who married Bielby BOYES on 8th August 1840 in Watton, and who was living in Kilnwick at the time of the 1841 and 1851 censuses. The witnesses at their marriage were Margaret and Daniel SCRUTON.
Our current best guess is that Mary was the daughter of Thomas SCRUTON and Ellen (aka Helen) RUSTON.
Thomas was the miller in Watton. He died August 18th 1836, aged 55, and is buried in Watton churchyard. His widow, [H]el[l]en, survived him by 34 years, dying on 3rd February 1870 aged 79 years.
Thomas and Ellen's children were variously baptised in Watton and Beverley Minster - and occasionally, in both!
The other SCRUTON family in Watton, who also had a daughter called Mary, were John and Jane Scruton. They are also buried in Watton churchyard, together with their infant grandson, William Walker. John died on 7th December 1852, aged 76, whilst Jane died on 10th December 1859 aged 72.
The 'other' Mary Scruton married Robert MOAT of Hotham on 2nd March 1839 in Watton by license, rather than by banns. The witnesses at this marriage were Robert FRANKISH and George RICHARDSON.
Unfortunately, even though both Marys married after mandatory civil registration came in in 1837, it seems that the vicar of Watton did not comply with the legal requirements, and continued to use the old form of register which does not give the father's name. Neither of these marriages appear in the GRO indexes, but they are definitely present in the Parish records. There is, therefore, an element of uncertainty over which Mary is 'ours', but the witnesses at the marriage, together with another few signs and hints, suggest that it was Thomas and Helen's daughter who married Bielby Boyes.

The 1841 census has much more limited infrmation than later censuses. People older than fifteen years of age were rounded up and down to the nearest five years ie. 21 was recorded as 20, 24 was recorded as 25, birthplace info is limited to whether or not the person was born in the county, and relationships are not given. |
